2020 Annual Appeal

MOVING BODIES, EASING MINDS

————————————————————

Dear NECCA Enthusiast,

At NECCA, we help our students develop agility, flexibility, strength, and creativity. This year has required that NECCA itself employ all of these skills to continue to meet our mission: At NECCA, the transformative power of circus arts enables a diverse and inclusive community of artists, teachers and students to realize their dreams.

When Wendy Harrison arrived in September as interim Executive Director, NECCA was well into its carefully phased re-opening plan. We had rehired all the staff who had been laid off and welcomed our largest ProTrack program enrollment yet. Training in a mask and physically distancing has not dulled the ProTrackers enthusiasm and thirst for learning.

I’ve never played around on a trapeze like that and it just really challenged me and excited me in a way I haven’t felt before . . . I feel like this new experimental door has been opened and I’m so curious and excited to explore it. Thank you for helping me find that door!

– Thea L, ProTrack 2020/21

Our robust cleaning processes and masked training protocol allowed us to begin teaching over the summer, with confidence that we were mitigating risk to the greatest extent possible. We have continued online teaching programs that allow us to stay connected with students who normally travel from around the world to take workshops here in Brattleboro. Thanks to the dedication and flexibility of our staff, the future looks bright for NECCA.

Circus has been a place to build strength so I can keep up with the demands of a highly active child with special needs. It has become my therapeutic, happy place where I feel humbled, inspired and full of life!

– Melanie White

None of this would have been possible without the dedicated work of outgoing Executive Director, Jamie Hodgson, and NECCA’s Founders, Elsie Smith and Serenity Smith Forchion, who worked tirelessly during the shut-down to secure funding from many sources. Our core coaching, administrative, and facilities staff responded to the challenge and poured themselves into finding new, safe ways to rig apparatuses and teach skills.

In addition to the amazing work of our staff, financial support has come from the Vermont Agency for Commerce and Community Development, Federal Paycheck Protection Program, New England Foundation for the Arts, Vermont Arts Council, and Thomas Thompson Trust. We’ve also received a vital development grant from the Vermont Arts Council (a three-year Arts Partnership Grant) that will support a strategic planning program and a Samara Fund grant for a new LGBTQ+ scholarship. We are so thankful for the responsiveness and flexibility of our lenders and donors.

But even with all of this support from state and federal governments, we are depending on our individual donors to make it through “COVID-time.” The external grants should cover much of the additional expenses from COVID, but they won’t cover all of them, and our revenues are down—with fewer programs and fewer students due to spacing limitations. As we head into colder weather, it is clear that we will need ongoing financial resources to ensure that NECCA’s doors remain open to all students. In a time when isolation and fear are taking their toll, movement and circus education is a way to cope with stress and a ray of hope for many.

Sophie has been dancing for quite a while . . . but this (NECCA) is where her heart really lives. She really glowed and came alive like I’ve never seen before when she was at circus. . .exhausted, excited, and proud of her accomplishments every day. – Breta Yvars Petraccia

– Breta Yvars Petraccia

NECCA offers emotional support, a safe space, and a caring welcome to hundreds of students of all ages and skill levels. We are so thankful to be able to continue to do what we love—share circus education and the love of it. I hope you will join us by giving what you can to help us continue this challenging and exciting work.

We are so very grateful.

Sincerely,

Wendy Harrison, Interim Executive Director

Elizabeth Wohl, Board President

WHY CIRCUS SCHOOL?

This is one of the questions we hear most often. Seriously! You could enroll yourself individually in every class you could schedule in a week, but there’s a lot more to a program than just individual classes.

1. We’re going to push you to do the things you don’t always want to do. For each person it’s different, whether you have a distaste for flex, conditioning, technique, or even dance, we’re here to identify these areas and help you stay on track. You’ll need all of these skills to be a successful performer.

2. We’ll identify gaps in your training you don’t even know about yet, making sure that nothing is holding you back.

3. You have almost unlimited support. An award-winning team of coaches is available to you. They spend their waking hours dreaming up ways to help you make your next leap and coordinating your classes to ensure that your time is well spent working toward your ultimate goals.

4. The gains. A full-time dedicated program allows you to progress further and faster than training on your own.

5. Save money! Add up what you would spend on individual training and it’s clear that ProTrack is a bargain.

6. You’re surrounded by other people pushing the boundaries of what’s possible every day. You can feed off of the inspiration of being surrounded by elite skills and athleticism each time you arrive on campus.

7. Learn the material you don’t even know exists (the stuff that is and isn’t on YouTube or Instagram). And learn it safely with the direction of a master coach to protect the longevity of your body.

8. Benefit directly from our custom-built facility, events, and workshops that travel through NECCA, exposing you to more learning opportunities, traveling coaches, and even casting directors.

9. Challenge yourself in every way possible.

10. You’ll have an amazing, grueling, inspiring, and life altering time!

Jamie’s Resignation

A Letter from our Executive Director—Jamie Hodgson

————————————————————

Hello to my cherished friends, family, and colleagues:

It is with an overwhelming set of emotions that I announce my intention to step down as NECCA’s Executive Director in the weeks ahead.

Before you worry—I’d like to assure everyone that both NECCA and I are doing just fine! We are great, in fact! NECCA is weathering the current challenges with grace and strength (if I do say so myself!) and is looking forward to the fall programming complete with the largest ProTrack class to date. Classes will be following strict COVID safety protocols, but they are happening! And they will assuredly be guided with as much care, humor, joy, and expertise as they always have been thanks to some of the best coaches in the industry.

Personally, I am also doing well, and this change is bittersweet. My heart continues to belong to NECCA as much as ever, even as my focus turns a bit closer to home. Some of you already know that I have been commuting from Connecticut to Brattleboro for 16 years! Given the continued uncertainty of current events, this distance has been harder to navigate. Recently, I was offered a position at a social justice nonprofit right in my own hometown. Working towards a more equitable and just society has always been a priority for me and I am grateful to be given an opportunity to support this mission.

I have been lucky to be part of NECCA since the beginning, but serving NECCA in a leadership role for the last 3 years has been one of my greatest honors and an absolute privilege. I have had the best vantage point to see the benefits that circus and NECCA bring to so many lives. I have witnessed up close the mastery and the joy that our staff have shared and continue to share with their students. I remain in awe of the dedication and passion of our staff, students, and community. This place truly holds magic.

Imagining the road ahead for NECCA fills me with tremendous joy! I know that the next Executive Director will bring fresh energy to build on the work we have done together and expand NECCA’s possibilities. I will be soaking in every accomplishment with pride.

And, not from afar! I am happy to share that I will be jumping in to guest coach when requested. I look forward to being an enthusiastic supporter and audience member at every show and event, as well as a circus parent. My 4-year-old made me promise that she will be able to continue to take classes and attend camps as often as possible.

I am comforted by the fact that NECCA is in such a stable and solid position, the pandemic notwithstanding, that I feel confident enough to make this decision at this time. This is thanks to you, our community: our students, our donors, our Board, and our amazing staff. Your steadfast support has been so crucial to NECCA’s success. Thank you for the privilege of trusting me in this role. Thank you for being my second family. I can’t wait to see you all again at future events and to catch up in person!

Wishing you happiness and health,
Jamie

A Note from the Board of Directors:

We are so delighted for Jamie and so grateful for all that she has done for NECCA, both over the last three years as Executive Director, and for the thirteen years before that. While we are sad to see her go, we are so thrilled that she is moving on to such a wonderful opportunity closer to her home and family.

We want you all to know that we will soon be announcing an interim Executive Director who will lead NECCA while the Board engages in a lengthier Executive Director search. Similar to our last search, the ED Search committee will have Board, Staff and Student representation, a composition which has proven to yield excellent results in the search process.

We on the Board are so grateful to each and every one of you for the support that you have given NECCA over these many years, and during this challenging pandemic time. As Jamie says, “This place truly holds magic,” and that magic is because of you.

Thank you,
Elizabeth Wohl
President of NECCA’s Board of Directors

COMMUNITY GARDEN

————————————————————

We are thrilled to announce that our community garden has been planted! We already have little peppers, big cucumbers, and fresh salad greens to share with you and this is just the beginning. Our two garden boxes are a great place to get your hands in the dirt, help something to grow, and find a little nourishment. If you have ideas for things you’d like to grow here (even just to learn more about how something grows) or would like to help with watering and weeding the garden, please reach out to Jenna at jciotta@necenterforcircusarts.com  . We look forward to expanding this project in ways that are guided by YOU, so thank you in advance for your energy and ideas!

See you soon!

————————————————————

Whether it is in person from behind a mask, or virtually over zoom, we hope to see you and catch up with how you are doing soon! Wishing you health and happiness from everyone here at NECCA.

JUNE 2020 – REOPENING PLAN

Hello NECCA Community,

————————————————————

We hope and trust that you are staying well out there! And… well… we miss you! Have you been taking advantage of virtual classes? Finding ways to do circus in your living room and in your yard? Doing partner acrobatics with the family dog? Maybe even climbing the actual curtains by now?! (Note: we do not recommend the last one for obvious reasons.)

Whatever you’ve been up to, we hope that you have found ways to fill your time with movement, creativity, and joy.

And in the meantime, as Vermont has begun a careful, phased reopening plan, we have been busy doing the same at the Trapezium! We have developed extensive protocols to reduce the risks of coronavirus exposure and transmission in the space and have already begun practicing and implementing these guidelines to prepare for your return.

So far, we’ve opened the space up for a few hours a day for staff training and are pleased to be able to announce that we will be offering limited spaces for members only training, distanced private lessons, and a few small and distanced adult session classes.

We’d love to see you here and can’t wait to welcome you back with open arms—scratch that—with a wave and a mask-muffled shout across a sparsely-populated, heavily-disinfected studio. It might not be the way we pictured the welcome back celebration together, but we’ll take what we can get!

Right now students can:

  • Continue taking a wide variety of Virtual Online Classes (https://necenterforcircusarts.org/training/virtual-circus-classes/) .
  • Schedule an online Private Lesson (https://necenterforcircusarts.org/training/private-lessons/) .
  • Sign up for a training time in Members Only (https://necenterforcircusarts.org/training/custom-training-programs/#open-training) training.
  • Schedule an in-person Private Lesson (https://necenterforcircusarts.org/training/private-lessons/) .
  • Sign up for one of a few, small Session Classes (https://necenterforcircusarts.org/training/adult-session-classes/) starting June 29th.
  • OR – check out one of the virtual or in-person workshop offerings in the next few months.
  • And coming soon (available starting June 29th): Virtual Summer Camp (https://necenterforcircusarts.org/youth-camps/) with lots of options to fit your schedule!

We’re beyond excited to be able to start running these programs and hope to continue to expand the options as it is safe to do so.

For more information about our COVID safety precautions, visit our COVID Information Page (https://necenterforcircusarts.org/covid-19-information/) on our website. Or, to get answers to any questions, please contact us below.

Wishing you a safe and healthy summer and we look forward to circus-ing again with you soon!

The NECCA Team

JUNE 2020 – BLACK LIVES MATTER

Dear NECCA Community,

————————————————————

We stand in solidarity in the fight against systemic racism and oppression in our country. Injustice and violence against black, indigenous, and people of color is real and it is prevalent.

BLACK LIVES MATTER. And we cannot be silent.

We are outraged and heartbroken over the recent and ongoing violence against people of color. We also realize these are not new issues or isolated occurrences and that meaningful change can only happen when we are willing to take action.

But what does a circus school have to do with racism and violence? Everything. We are all part of the same society. Institutionalized oppression is everywhere. It is all of our responsibilities to rout it out of every organization by showing up and doing the work by identifying our shortcomings and doing better.

We acknowledge that we are a predominantly white organization in both a predominately white industry and in a predominately white town. And since our mission is: “At NECCA, the transformative power of circus arts enables a diverse and inclusive community of artists, teachers and students to realize their dreams” we must do as much as possible to promote diversity, be inclusive, and actively support circus students and circus artists of color.

We understand that we have work to do.

Here is where we will start:

  1. As our staff returns and we reopen, we will offer each staff member paid time to engage in anti-racist education and provide resources that have been recommended by black leaders.
  2. We will actively seek out, promote, and present workshops and performances by circus artists and teachers of color and make this initiative a key part of our annual plan.
  3. We will work to remove financial barriers for students of color to attend our programs by establishing additional scholarship opportunities in order to diversify the voices in our student body and elevate black artists.
  4. We are adding curriculum to our ProTrack program to start conversations about the racism and abuse of black people in the history of American circus.
  5. We will keep working. We will continue to critically examine and then improve our policies, programs, and community engagement to better serve marginalized communities by developing internal checks to keep ourselves accountable. We will speak and we will act with intention, not allowing perfection to get in the way of progress so that we can continue to engage in the work to improve.

If you are a white individual or an organization led by someone who is, we challenge you to find your own actionable ways to be anti-racist. If you’d like to work together, we are here and ready to grow with you.

If you are a black circus student, artist, teacher, or organization, or a circus student, artist, teacher or organization of color and you’d like to reach out to NECCA with feedback, suggestions, requests, ways we can help make sure you feel overwhelmingly welcome at NECCA, or ways we can support you or amplify your voice, we are here and ready to listen.

We look forward to the work and the conversations to come.

MAY 2020 – COVID-19 COMMUNITY UPDATE #4

Dear NECCA Friends,

————————————————————

While the beautiful trapezium is quiet and empty, we aren’t letting it get us down—quite the opposite. We know that our empty building represents an entire community working together to stay safe and to keep each other safe. This is nothing short of powerful and uplifting!

We sincerely hope that you are feeling secure and happy wherever you are doing your social distancing, and want to let you know a little bit about what we’ve been up to while you’ve been away and what will be happening next.

First we have to thank you—our community near and far—for your support during this time! You have been generous and stayed connected with us in so many ways while we couldn’t be together in person. So many of you have donated (https://necenterforcircusarts.org/support-necca/) directly to NECCA or taken one of our virtual classes (https://necenterforcircusarts.org/training/virtual-circus-classes/) to show your support. As an added bonus, we’ve been able to SEE many of you, too, through the magic of group Internet training. Who would have thought we’d all end up in our PJ’s together doing couch-apparatus conditioning via video conference?! The times are ridiculous, but circus people find ways to be even more ridiculous in all the best of ways!

As a result of your continued support, we know that we will be able to open again when it is safe to do so. What an amazing gift to be able to say that with confidence! You made that possible and we thank you with all of our collective hearts!

Speaking of reopening, we are currently focused on determining every detail of when and how that will be able to happen. We anticipate being able to offer a carefully-phased reopening according to state and federal guidelines as well as with additional considerations specific to our particular industry. Circus isn’t naturally socially a distant endeavor and we are designing significant adjustments to programming and policies in order to provide the classes we all love while reducing the risk of coronavirus transmission. As you can imagine, this is no small task. We are working to prepare now so that we will be able to welcome you back once we are permitted and it is safe to do so. Safety has always been paramount at NECCA and will continue to be no matter the challenge.

Stay tuned for detailed information about our re-opening plans and additional COVID-19 related safety policies. Until then, keep joining us for online classes and drop us a line about all the things—circus and non-circus—that you’ve been up to during your quarantine.

Curious what else NECCA folks have been doing? We’re glad you asked! As challenging as this period has been for many, we are so inspired by some of the ways that our staff, students, and community have been spending their time and we are so grateful for how it has allowed us to focus on the positive each day. Here are a few amazing ways folks have been sharing their talents that we’d like to share:
ProTrack student, Violet Livingston, spends her time teaching her old bulldog contact juggling and learning to make linocut prints for cards to send to friends and family.

  • Coach, Jenna Ciotta, made a homemade loom and is learning to weave.
  • ProTrack student, Owen Leonard, has been adding to a growing collection of stunning bridge photoshoots.
  • Reception staff and hand balancer, Rachel Hipszer, turned her painting talent into a new business!
  • Coaches and students Finn, Marysia, Anna, Bridget, and Tony have been volunteering to deliver meals around Brattleboro.
  • Co-Founder, Elsie Smith and her husband Jim have been providing free breakfast sandwiches on weekend mornings along with a tribe of amazing helpers. Cherry Rail Farms, Pete and Gerry’s eggs, Cabot Cheese, and Against the Grain all donated supplies.
  • Coach, Casey Hanes, does D&D online with the young person he’s been mentoring to stay in touch.
  • When she’s not running online classes, Co-Founder Serenity Smith Forchion (with Elsie’s help as well) has been tirelessly sewing masks with reusable filters to donate to various health facilities in the region!

Thanks to NECCA staff and students for sharing these and keep it up!
