Mime as a Performance Tool

With Jackie Davis

Mime—it’s invisible walls, invisible ropes, and whiteface makeup, right? Well… Yes! AND. Mime is also the musicality of movement, the lightness or heaviness to convey mood, and a new way of relating to space. This AND will inform your work in circus performance—adding depth, nuance, and presence to your acts.

Yes, we will explore the fun techniques of classic mime illusions (like walls and ropes), AND we’ll unpack the deeper meaning and symbolism behind getting stuck in a box or being pulled by life’s demands. Come along!

About the Coach

Jackie Davis, EdM, trained intensively in mime at 13, joined La Compagnie du Mime at 15, and moved to New York City to pursue a mime career. By 16, she was a Compagnie instructor within NYU’s School of the Arts 8-credit mime concentration, and she has trained with master mime Marcel Marceau in several intensives.

At 21, Jackie became a resident mime at Walt Disney World’s Epcot Center (French Pavilion), performing 4,000+ shows over nearly four years. She learned clowning after marrying former Ringling Brothers clown Rick Davis, performing throughout New England together for over 20 years. A leader in circus arts education, Jackie founded the Hilltop Circus at Pine Hill/High Mowing School, the Silver Lining Circus Camp, and the Flying Gravity Circus teen performance company, all in NH.

She was a founding member of the American Youth Circus Organization (AYCO) and is the author of Do-It-Yourself Circus Lab for Kids.
