Weekend Immersion: Rope

With Cody Hayman

Learn to float! Develop shapes that stay suspended unexpectedly, beats that hang in the air, and a movement quality that will glide, twirl, furl, and unfurl as if you’re moving underwater or floating in space. And because we can’t beat all weekend long, we’ll have time to look at how to build more power in your dynamic movements, apply c-shaping concepts to moves beyond standard roll-ups (don’t worry, we’ll do those too), and learn how to practice lightness and ease in how you move through the air. We’ll also take advantage of having our pit to work on dynamic skills.

Prerequisites

Students should have a current and regular rope practice, be able to do multiple inversions cleanly through short- and long-arm hangs, be able to do two pull-ups on the rope, and be comfortable doing beats, windmills/wheeldowns and have some familiarity with c-shaping.

About the instructor

Cody Hayman found the circus in Olympia, WA in 2009, where he was a founding member of Airbound Underground and an instructor at SANCA. Though he started as a rope artist, Cody has picked up many other circus disciplines in the years since, including trapeze, hair hanging, and clowning. He has always had a passion for community-based circus performance, producing countless shows in Olympia and New Orleans, as well as performing and teaching all over the country for events like Sh’Bang, Atlanta Aerial Arts Festival, InFringe Fest New Orleans, and others.

Cody’s approach to teaching mirrors his approach to performing: always with a sense of curiosity, enthusiasm, and a dash of flamboyance.
