Aerial Toolbox: Functional & Poetic Movement Integration w/ Nicki Miller

May 15 – 17, 2020

An aerial artist’s creative work synthesizes the spectacle of aerial skill with the subtleties of human expression. This requires a mobile physical body and the ability to translate ideas into emotive movement qualities. It requires us to deprioritize manipulation of apparatus and the “”performing”” of aerial tricks as the building blocks of choreography, and instead allow choreography to emerge from the truths and stories that already live in our body and soul.

This integrative immersion with Nicki Miller offers a balanced mix of the tools that support a physically sustainable and creatively rich aerial practice. Deepen your relationship to anatomy and physiology with an emphasis on Functional Range Conditioning. Translate that awareness to poetic movement on your apparatus (we will use sling/spanset but this work translates to any apparatus). Learn creative association strategies to unearth your artistic voice when developing aerial choreography.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Nicki Miller is an interdisciplinary poetic storyteller with an emphasis on aerial arts. Based in NYC, she is an aerial theatre artist, visual artist, and movement coach/educator. She is co-founder and artistic director of Only Child Aerial Theatre. She has also been a resident artist in many national and international festivals and residency programs including Cirkus Cirkör (Sweden), the 2016/17 New Victory LabWorks Program (NYC), and Circus Sessions at The Harbourfront Centre (Toronto, Canada). Nicki has invested over a decade in silks and rope technique. However, many years of training aerial while neglecting to care for underlying scoliosis developed into chronic pain by the of summer 2018. Nicki has found invaluable healing resources for functional movement in Functional Range Conditioning, Kinstretch, PRI Myokinematic Restoration and Postural Respiration. She is certified in all of these modalities and integrates them alongside aerial training. To complement functional movement and deepen her physical artistry, Nicki trained with UK based physical theatre company Frantic Assembly in 2016 and at their Advanced Training Programme in London in 2017, and is also student of Ohad Naharin’s gaga movement language. Nicki has been taking regular gaga classes in NYC since 2017, and attended NYC Gaga Summer Intensive 2019 as well as NYC GagaLab Winter 2020. Learn more at nickimiller.com
