Program Overview

Every week the program includes
9 hours of group training sessions
1 hour of semi-private instruction
2 hrs of tumbling, ballet and other movement classes
Membership to the Outer Limits Gym"

Goals of the program

1. teach how to stretch and strengthen the body for the rigors of professional circus work
2. teach basic skills on the floor and in the air
3. introduce intermediate/advanced skills as each student is ready
4. encourage the creative process
5. encourage the personal and creative support of an ensemble group

No circus experience is necessary, but some background in movement or performance arts is recommended. Maximum enrollment is 18 students.

Is there an audition process?

There is simple enrollment process. Please complete the Application Form, and send it to us with a DVD/video (maximum 5 minutes) with as many of the following skills that can be safely executed: cartwheel, front roll/dive roll, splits (both sides), sitting pike with a forward bend, straddle on the floor with a forward bend, and a back bend (pushing up from the floor is okay!). We have a demonstration of the required skills in our Media Gallery. Use the remaining time to add any other skills you would like us to see including aerial work, acrobatics, juggling, dance, theater, stupid human tricks, flexibility and personality.

We will select students based on this DVD and a follow up phone interview. We highly recommend that any prospective students visit NECCA and Brattleboro, VT to make sure that the atmosphere and location will be appropriate to your needs.

Our enrollment deadline for Round One is Monday, March 15, 2010. After that, we will continue to accept applications for Round Two, until the program is full.

Are there schoalrships?

There are limited work exchange positions available for 25% off the cost of tuition. If you are interested please indicate your interest in this when you send in your application and a Work Exchange application will be sent to you if you are accepted into the program.

What is the schedule?

Group Training sessions: Tuesdays, Thursdays & Fridays
Semi-private lesson: Usually Tuesdays or Thursdays
Ballet/Tumbling/Movement lessons: Tuesdays and Thursdays
Open Studio training: Minimum requirement of 6 hours per week
One and three day workshops: Schedule TBA

Each General Training session starts with a warm up and stretching. There will be frequent workshops with guest instructors in specific training areas such as mime, theatrical presence, movement and clowning.

There will be 6 hours of additional required time during the week for each person to train on their own in an "Open Studio" format. The studio is available at a wide variety of times to accommodate different schedules and training needs. Students are encouraged to add more hours if they are interested, but the minimum of 6 must be maintained.

During the first month of the program the work will focus on training core strength and awareness. This will be followed by a focus on new skills. Then we will explore the creative process with a group presentation at our Winter Cabaret show in December. Then we will return to learning more skills and gaining better technical proficiency as well as exploring performance qualities and creative endeavors.
